Everyone new joins at Entrant or Technician, then moves up through the examination and the Membership Committee. Tell us where you are now and we’ll show you the route.

How joining works
Four steps, and you can see where you are at every one.
Create your account
Sign up in a couple of minutes. You do not need to finish your application in one sitting: save it and come back.
Apply as an Entrant
Your experience, qualifications and projects, with supporting evidence uploaded as you go. The office checks it and confirms your membership.
Preparation day and examination
Attend the IDE examination preparation day and sit the examination. Pass and you are an Associate (AMIDE).
Full Member
After a year, apply with a short portfolio. The Membership Committee reviews it, then a professional interview.
Before you apply
Do I need a proposer and seconder?
The requirement differs by grade and still needs confirmation from the Institute. The application will not invent one; ask the membership office if you are unsure.
What does it cost?
There is a joining fee and an annual subscription that varies by grade. Current rates are published on the subscriptions page and confirmed before you commit to anything. See subscriptions →
How long does it take?
The Membership Committee meets four times a year. Applications complete and evidenced ahead of a meeting are considered at it; you’ll see the next meeting date in your account.
What happens at the interview?
If an interview is required, the office will explain the format and offer available times before you book.
