Which grade am I?
Seven grades, one standard. Tell us where you are now and we’ll point you towards the relevant route without pretending an online form can decide your grade.
Suggested route
—
This does not decide a grade. The published criteria and the evidence in your application determine what the Membership Committee can assess.
How joining works
Four steps, and you can see where you are at every one.
Create your account
Sign up in a couple of minutes. You do not need to finish your application in one sitting — save it and come back.
Build your application
Your experience, qualifications and projects, with supporting evidence uploaded as you go. The office will confirm any proposer or seconder requirement.
Book an interview if required
Where an interview forms part of the assessment, the office offers available slots and you choose the one that suits.
Committee decision
The Membership Committee meets four times a year. You'll see exactly where your application stands the whole way through.
Before you apply
Do I need a proposer and seconder?
The requirement differs by grade and still needs confirmation from the Institute. The application will not invent one; ask the membership office if you are unsure.
What does it cost?
There is a joining fee and an annual subscription that varies by grade. Current rates are published on the subscriptions page and confirmed before you commit to anything. See subscriptions →
How long does it take?
The Membership Committee meets four times a year. Applications complete and evidenced ahead of a meeting are considered at it; you’ll see the next meeting date in your account.
What happens at the interview?
If an interview is required, the office will explain the format and offer available times before you book.
