The burden of proving competence has shifted onto the people commissioning and managing the work. The Institute cannot carry that duty for you, but it can give you something solid to rest it on: an assessed grade, held by an individual, verifiable by anyone.

Employer accounts
Most firms end up managing a dozen separate memberships, a dozen renewal dates and no clear view of who is actually accredited. An employer account gives one view across the individual members a firm employs. Membership itself stays personal: the Institute assesses and accredits engineers, not companies.

Appointing a demolition engineer
Three things worth doing before you appoint, none of which cost anything:
- Check the grade, not the letters on the email signature. Search the register — it returns grade and standing, and shows where a membership has lapsed.
- Specify the grade you actually need. The competence framework sets out what each grade means, so you can require it rather than hope for it.
- Ask about CPD. Membership is maintained by continuing development. A current member has evidenced 12 hours a year, six of them core.
