Bierrum International specialize in the design, construction, repair, maintenance and demolition of tall reinforced concrete structures particularly chimneys, cooling towers and silos and they work on a worldwide basis.

Through their knowledge of the chimney industry, it became clear that there was a requirement for a methodology to be developed to demolish chimneys in difficult environments where there was live plant in close proximity to the structure. Bierrum developed the “Spider” demolition tool which has been used successfully on several 180m high chimneys in the UK and is currently being used on the “B” station stack at Rugeley.

Title of Talk

Innovative Demolition of a 180m chimney with the Bierrum “Spider”

In 2006, Rugeley Power commenced the design and construction of a Flue Gas Desulphurisation installation at their Rugeley Power Station. The project involved the construction of a new 180m high chimney. The existing chimney needed to be demolished but it was situated very close to existing and new plant and the client specified that no material was allowed to fall outside the chimney.

Rugeley Power contracted with Bierrum International Ltd to use their “Spider” demolition system to ensure the safe and speedy removal of the structure without the need for expensive protection works to the surrounding equipment.

Aims and Objectives

The Institute of Demolition Engineers (IDE) exists to promote and foster the science of demolition engineering.

The main objectives include the:

  • promotion of use of more efficient techniques in the industry
  • encouragement of safer methods of working
  • provision of a qualifying body for the industry

Professional Body

The Institute is a Professional Affiliate of the Engineering Council

The qualified Demolition Engineer is a professional within the industry.

The Institute is an organisation committed to continuing professional development and has its own scheme which is mandatory for all active members.

It also provides a forum where colleagues may exchange ideas and meet others with allied interests.

The reputation of the Institute is rightly bound up with that of its members. The Institute will take such steps as are necessary to ensure that its members conform to professional and ethical standards.

The required standards are described in the Rules of the Institute

Continuous Personal Development (CPD) – Am I Bovvered?

As you will be asked for proof of CPD throughout 2010 and beyond why not decide now to make CPD one of your goals for this year. Attend as many seminars or training days that you can, record your attendance and use those records to prove your CPD.

The CPD record will allow you to demonstrate to potential clients that you take institute membership seriously, that your industry knowledge is up to date and that you are dedicated to your status as an institute member.

With two major seminars a year and numerous regional meetings the opportunity to obtain IDE CPD points has never been better so make a decision to attend as many as possible and keep recording those points as “Points make competence”.
