Regional 08.10.15The IDE Midlands Regional Meeting (CPD event) held at The Oak Hotel in Solihull on the 8th October 2015 was a well-attended meeting of existing and potential IDE members.

The event, hosted by DSM Demolition Ltd, attracted over 30 attendees and all were treated to two informative presentations.

The first presentation was given by Mr Stuart Butler who works in Avonmouth, Bristol for  Molson, one of the leading and largest suppliers of demolition plant and equipment throughout Europe. It is important for Demolition Engineers to have an understanding and appreciation of the specialist plant and equipment that is available to demolition contractors and where further technical data on such can be obtained. Stuart informed the meeting of the wide range of manufacturers that his company represents for sales and service including  Hyundai, Kobelco, Keestrack – Screeners & Crushers, Ammann, NC Engineering, NPK attachments, Kaeser and Engcon.

The second presentation was given by Mr Martin Smith who works as a Safety Officer for Robinson and Birdsell a Demolition and Recycling company based at Wetherby. Martins talk on ‘The Unseen Side of Explosive Demolition’ informed those present about all of the planning that goes in to a successful demolition using explosives. In particular the organisation involved such as the local authority, police, fire and ambulance services, statutory undertakers, communications companies, highways authorities, railways, HSE and the like. Martin drew attention to the general public and whilst most people are happy to co-operate there is usually a small minority with a ‘won’t co-operate’ stance and how the police and other agencies use their powers to resolve difficult situations.

The IDE would like to thank DSM Demolition for their support and organisation of yet another successful regional meeting.
